Do I need a business license to attend and purchase from a trade show?

I am trying to start an online business but I am having difficulties with finding items to resale. I have tried a wholesale liquidators, but a lot of the items are sometimes damaged, thus I eat that cost. Where does an individual go to purchase items for resale. I have heard others mention trade shows, but I don't have any information as to how they work, or how I find out where they are, and how to find ones with items I am interested in. Also, do I need a business license to be eligible to attend and/or make any purchases? Could someone tell me the appropriate events ( I'm not sure "Trade Shows" is the correct term I should be referring to.) to attend and the pertinent information I need? I often attend gift industry trade shows to see merchandise and also to speak at the events, and your answer is "yes," a business license is required to attend and purchase from a trade show, but that's not the whole story.

Gift trade shows are the place where retailers who are looking to purchase merchandise for their stores go to see new products and old favorites. Absolutely every type of item you can imagine that's sold in stores are displayed at these shows.

Most gift trade shows occur between January and March and again between June and August. A list of these shows is available through the link below.

If you do not have a license that confirms that you are in business (the license qualifies you to attend, or everyone would be able to walk through the doors), most shows offer a guest pass allowing you to attend for a price between $30 - $50, depending on the show.

The guest pass is worth the investment if you truly want to start your online business.
